Built in the 7th century, the church of God Sophia dominates the current junction of Ermou and Agia Sofia streets and is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in the city. On the same road, towards Egnatia Odos, is the early Christian church of Panagia Achiropoietou, the 11th century Panagia Chalkeon and of course higher, on Agiou Dimitriou Street, the patron saint Agios Dimitrios, perhaps the most important building in Thessaloniki, dating to 5th century. It has catacombs and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
